Merlin Cinemas are thrilled to be the proud operators of this beautiful artdeco cinema, located in the heart of Weston’s conservation area and heritage action zone. The cinema first opened its doors in 1911 as an Electric. In 1935, the cinema was redeveloped as an Odeon Theatre, one of four Odeons to be designed by architect T Cecil Howitt and opened triumphantly with an organ performance of the specially composed ‘Around the corner at the Odeon’. The Plaza’s Compton organ is one of only 2 still working in the UK today and special screenings with organ preludes are part of the opening programme, in association with the Theatre Organ Club.
Hollywood arrives soon with new films Wonka from Paddington director Paul King and starring Timothée Chalamet, Olivia Colman and the scene-stealing Hugh Grant as an Oompah Loompah; Wish, a Disney Animation Studios’ release starring Ariana Debose and Chris Pine; along with Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Our CHRISTMAS CRACKERS BIG MOVIE DEAL is not to be missed! We’ll be showing Christmas favourites to watch with the family, including Elf and Home Alone, as well as firm favourite, It's a Wonderful Life, accompanied by an organ prelude for a special performance; or with friends, like seasonal favourite Love Actually! For just £6.99 per person, including cinema ticket + £4 to spend at the kiosk, this is affordable Christmas fun at it’s best.
We are delighted to have brought this beautiful cinema back to life and have already started to carry out some improvements, others are planned and there is much more to do, but we are committed to continue improving the cinema further. In the meantime we very much appreciate your support.
We look forward to welcoming you soon!
